On the facts of this case the defendant was denied a fair trial on the basis of the cumulative effect of the following errors: (1) refusing to allow the defense to introduce evidence which would tend to indicate that the states principal witness had a motive and the capacity himself to commit the crime after independent evidence was introduced to connect the witness with the crime; and (2) refusing to allow the defense to introduce evidence that the states principal witness had a history of blackouts during periods of heavy drinking when the evidence indicated that he had engaged in such activities during the time period which he testified to at trial.
